The past few days Gretchen has been swimming in the state age group short course swim meet. It was in Bountiful at the South Davis rec center. The meet started on Wednesday but she did not have any events so for us the meet started on Thursday. Until a year ago last September I knew nothing about competitive age group swimming. That is not true now. There is still much I do not know but I can tell you that swim meets take a long time. There is a lot of time spent waiting for your swimmer to race and then the race is over rather quickly. Swimmers work so hard. I'm sure that is true of athletes in all sports but when I watch the time commitment of swimmers I can't help but be impressed.
The meet ran Wednesday through Saturday, preliminary heats in the morning and finals at night. You have to make a time standard in each event to qualify to swim. Julia aged up in January and didn't have times that qualified in her new age group so she didn't get to swim at this meet. She will swim next weekend in the consolation meet. That one is only Friday night and Saturday day.
Gretchen likes to make sure we are watching her when she get ready to race. We either get a thumbs up right before stepping on the block or when she is actually on the block.
Brian had to work every day during the meet. He made it to 3 sessions and was super happy to wear his convertible pants. This very attractive picture of him changing out of his pants in a church parking lot in Hawaii is cause for many smiles in our house. It's a good look for him. Not many can pull it off.
Julia went to the most sessions with me. In fact, she only missed one and that was because she was at school all day Thursday. She is a good sport! Sam and Syd made it to a couple sessions also but their lives are busy too now that their swim season is over and lacrosse has begun.
Gretchen did so well at this meet! She dropped time in all 8 of her events and dropped time in her legs of the 3 relays she was in. She made it to finals in all but 1 of her events. 2 of those events were timed finals during the prelims so that was great that she only had to swim those once. Overall it's a lot of swimming, waiting, traveling and worrying. Way to go Gretchen!
